Fun Deck Friday – Heroes Gone Wild! – Permission Denied!

Posted by The Masked Ameoba on August 29, 2008

With all the talk about permission control, and how it fares in the game, I was wondering how the deck would do if you tossed it into a new format and let it go wild.

I give you the results.

The Heroes Gone Wild format is one that let’s you take 2 heroes and smash them together.  In this case you get the bonuses of 2 different guys, and a whole new batch of possibilities comes to mind.  In case you need a refresher, the rules for the HGW format can be found here.

Another fun format for everyone! For this event, you will be able to construct a deck with two heroes in mind. Both heroes have to be of the same faction. You choose the hero you want to play, put the second hero beneath that hero, just so you can see the class icon in the upper right. The main hero is the only hero that can be targeted, but it can use any card that either hero could play. A Warrior with a Felhunter! A Mage with a Felsteel Reaper! The possibilities are endless. It will be interesting to see what decks come out of this tournament. The winner receives a complete set of Hunt For Illidan!

Since this week I have been focusing on the permission decks, I wondered what would happen in a mage’s interrupts were put together with the healing and win condition of the Discipline priest.  This is what happened.

Raesa (Top Hero) / Varanis

Abilities

  • 3 – Slow
  • 4 – The More, The Scarier (thanks for the idea Grease! – even though I can’t stand that movie, or musical.)
  • 3 – Fizzle
  • 4 – Nether Fracture
  • 4 – Arcane Torrent
  • 4 – Greater Heal
  • 3 – Enlightenment
  • 4 – PW Shield
  • 4 – Lesser Heal
  • 3 – Divine Spirit
  • 4 – Flash Heal

Equipment

  • 3 – Gift of the Elven Magi
  • 3 – Superior Mana Oil

Quests

  • 4 – Solanian’s Belongings
  • 3 – Zapped Giants
  • 3 – Forces of Jaedenar
  • 3 – Donation of Mageweave
  • 2 – Donation of Silk

Oh yeah.

Enlightenment.

You can already see how this deck plays out can’t you.  The mage’s interrupts give you a way to slow down the big guys that could really hurt you in the early game.  The priests heals let you survive to the later turns until you have enough abilities in your graveyard to pop off enlightenment and win the game.  After enlightenment hits the table you also should have a divine spirit ready to ready your 3 resources to have a nether fracture ready to go, should any shenanigans come about on your opponents turn.

The quest lineup is all about getting more cards in your hand.  Every one will hit and be used.  The equipment is much the same.  Gift gives you a good way to fish for abilities, and the superior mana oil will have you drawing as many as 2 cards a turn starting on turn 3.

I was going to go with the undead hero in order to add in cannibalize to the mix, but then I realized that I had no way to kill opposing allies.  No way to fuel the card!

So there you have it, another week down.  Have a great weekend!

Is Raesa a Blood Elf? If not, Solanian’s isn’t going to have the full effect.

And 15 ability interrupts seems like a lot. Where’s your board sweeper? No Bringer? No The More, the Scarier?

The image finally loaded. I guess she is a BE :P

You know, you may be right on the extra counterspells.

Raesa is a BE, so that works well. I think I am gonna modify it a little and get the more the scarier in there.

    Thanks for the tip!

One thing that I’ve recently seen was Staff of the Ashtongue Deathsworn. This allows your Enlightenment to trigger at the end of turn rather than the start. Meaning there are alot less answers to your combo. How many instant ability-destruction spells are there? Not many.

I was looking forward to the Heroes Gone Wild tournament at Gencon, but fortunately I made day 2 of Continentals. I was a little disappointed, especially when I heard they cancelled the HGW tournament. Seems like such a fun format.

I had a Warrior/Warlock deck idea with lots of DoTs and ways to increase the damage. Clinging Curse, Rend, Fel Fire, Immolate, Unstable Affliction with Gauntlets of Vindication, Akama’s Sash, Twig of the World Tree and Mortal Strike. So sad I never got to try it out. :(

So… um… what does this do about a turn 1 Bloodsoul turn 2 Glous?

Just take 5 a turn and hope to interrupt everything after that?

It heals/prevents until you over-extend and then play The More, The Scarier to wipe the board. I’d actually swap Flash Heal for Heal.

I totally forgot about this format! I need to get to work with my Warmaster Bojo/Jonas White strikeout deck w/Mortal Strike and Mutilate.

I would put in soul rend/ melt face for rush control. more the scarier is tough because of its limits
